I find the posts where people’s pets die unbearably sad. I find them even harder to read, for some reason, than the ones about failed cycles and miscarriages.
Anyway, Hippo, whose real name was Tiger, died tonight. He’d been seeming a little off for about a week. I took him to the vet this afternoon. As soon as the vet weighed him and found him at 17 lbs, down from 23 last December, I knew it wasn’t good. They were running tests but said I could bring him home tonight and back tomorrow.
This evening, he could no longer walk, and A rushed him to the emergency vet. They found a huge tumor in his spleen and were planning all kinds of tests and possible surgery when he arrested and died.
I can’t believe how quickly it happened. Just yesterday I took this picture and complained mildly about how inconvenient it is to have a cat in the bathroom sink all the time. He was a really really good cat and he gave great hugs. I can’t believe I’ll never curl up with him again.

Oh, Tiger. He was beautiful. I’m so, so sorry.
(((hugs)))
I’m so sorry. (((hugs)))
Oh Sweetie, I’m sorry. We put one of our dogs to sleep last month, and I still miss him.
I’m so so sorry. These posts always get me too… unbearably sad is exactly right. Thinking of you.
I’m so sorry. Tiger was beautiful…
What a sweet boy. I’m so sorry.
I am so sorry. He was gorgeous, and reminds me of my Jack. He’s almost 14 and has lost a lot of weight recently. How old was he? It’s so incredibly sad to lose a pet.
i am really sorry, cat. i know how difficult this is…. and shocking. he was beautiful… tears for you.
Oh Cat. I lost my Zoe (the opposite of Hippo in size!) in June, and I was a mess for a month. I am so so sorry for all the losses (tata) that you are facing.
I’m so sorry to hear about Tiger a/k/a Hippo. I loved reading stories about his antics. My thoughts are with you. (((hugs)))
Oh, honey. I’m so sorry.
So sorry. (((HUGS))) It was probably better he went so fast. He made the decision not you.
Awww, I’m sorry, Cat.
I’m so, so sorry. I know he was a member of your family for a long time. They carry your heart well with those paws, don’t they?
I am so sorry.. My parents cat is 18 and I cannot think of life without him, he was there when I graduated high school, college, got married and had kids. I know it must be so hard for you right now. Take care, from a longtime reader and lurker.
I”m sorry. =(
Ohhh, I am so sorry to hear about your cat! It is so hard…thank you for sharing parts of his life with us.
I am so sorry.
We had to put our beloved cat, D’artagnan “to sleep” a couple of months ago (lymphoma). It was a couple of months after the birth of our second child and our cat’s death combined with the postpartum hormones turned me into a bit of an emotional wreck.
Be kind to yourself.
Oh my. It’s so hard to lose our beloved pets. I’m so very sorry for you.
Oh I’m so sorry for you. In May we lost our 17 yo cat Alex and our 14 yo dog Max within 6 weeks of each other.
It rips a hole in your heart because you have lost a part of your family.
But I am happy to say inside the heartbreak there is room to make new loves. We adopted a cat Emme in Sept. She spent her whole life in the animal shelter so brings us entertainment every day while the world is opening up to her. And 3 weeks ago we adopted a new dog because my husband had a terrible accident and while he was in the hospital decided he needed a dog to help him recover. Thus Colin (13 months and 110 lbs) arrived. In some ways it makes us miss Max more but both he and Emme brought so much love with them.
Of course no other cat will replace your beloved Tiger but hopefully Tiger will find and send your way a new cat to love you as much as he did.
