Galloping Cats

Somebody please tell me I’m not alone January 20, 2007

Filed under: Gatito — gallopingcats @ 7:51 pm

One of A’s oldest friends came to visit today, and Gatito took an instant dislike. There was really nothing at all that this guy did, but Gatito pointed right at him and cried hysterically– the same reaction as with that one baby. Even when I brought Gatito into another room, he kept glancing suspciously in the direction of the friend and crying every time his voice rose or he laughed. After a couple of hours, the guy said he guessed he’d better go, and we couldn’t really argue. It was so incredibly embarrassing and we felt terribly!

We are suddenly very popular– must be the slow season– and I’m now so nervous about all of our upcoming social plans. It just seems so unpredictable and the only solution seems to be kicking guests out of our house.

Please, someone, tell me this has happened to you before!

Separately, I’ve received a few emails asking about T, the new nanny, and about my visit with the cat shrink. I’m working on answers, but now would be a good time to get any other burning questions off your chest.

Oh! And words two and three were eggs and cheese. This has to be one of the more unusual groups of first words. Nary a mama or dada in sight (and he doesn’t sign these either)!

The little hellion that I sit said “Dude” for his first word. Dude is my cat’s name, and more than that it is the BEST THING EVER to read in a friend’s baby book. First word: Dude. I shall chuckle about that for years and years.

My niece sees my BIL’s parents about 3 times a year. The last time she saw his dad, though, she burst into tears and howls (she was 13 months). He couldn’t even come in the room. Although they thought it was a little funny, my sister and BIL were embarrassed. During the week, they gradually introduced my BIL’s dad in small doses and she gradually became okay with him in the room, but it took a while.

Well, I hear *I* did that as a kid. And apparently, I had really good judgement at the time. Kindof wish I hadn’t lost it.

On the other hand, I saw a toddler (my japanese teammate’s daughter) scream bloody murder when my texan teammate showed up with a cowboy hat. no hat, no tears. hat, howling. of course, she also felt better when dresed in her picachu costume, so go figure.

A’s first word was cheese! I was so proud. She didn’t say Mama or Dada for quite a while either.

I must have missed the news about the cat shrink! I look forward to hearing about it though.

Smacky hates my dad. My dad had a stroke 3 years ago and he clomps around awkwardly, talks really loudly and is prone to acting a little strange – he seems to trigger the boy’s inner alarm system and there’s always at least a full day of acclimating when we visit.
There are lots of tears and refusals to come into the room and drama. Usually the overnight calms it down a lot and the next day it gets better. But my poor dad- he can’t even enjoy his grandson…it makes me feel so bad. I’m not sure you can convince a toddler to be okay with someone when his instincts are telling him no – I think it’s one of those stages you just have to ride out.

Eggs and cheese? Cool! Smacky took a long time to say mama and dada – even now I’m “a-mah” and S is “dee.” He just never got into the consonant repetition thing. Maybe it has something to do with learning two languages?

Yes, Polly has rejected some (not a lot, but a couple) of our friends. V. embarrasing.
Her first word was “pit stop,” which is what her Dad would say to her as he carted her off to change her diaper.

A thought… was this guy by any chance bearded? My baby cousin went through a stage where she was terrified of my dad because of his beard.

My older son was 17 months old when we went to my great uncles funeral. One of my male cousins was there and he had long hair, which seemed to really freak my son out. I guess he had never seen a male with long hair close up before…

    *SIGH*

You haven’t posted since like, SATURDAY. I’m having withdrawals over here! Where are you? I need my Gatito fix!
