Gatito’s signing is really taking off. It has even won over my skeptical family. Sure, my sister asked if people think he’s deaf (WTF?), but mostly I think they are impressed and enjoy seeing what he’s thinking. And he seems to enjoy it so much, I actually wonder if we won’t continue after he starts speaking– there are volumes and volumes of Signing Times video, so if he’s still interested, we can keep going.
Last night, my mom came over for a visit wearing a fur coat (don’t get me started on how vile I think that is). When he saw her, Gatito started furiously signing dog. No, I told him, that’s not a dog, that’s Grandma, until I realized he thought she looked like a dog in that coat. She was surprised when I told her, but he did not stop signing dog until she took it off. I thought it was hilarious (and, luckily, so did she).
Other words in his vocabulary: cat, bird, fish, bear, plane, car (obviously), sleep, eat, milk, cookie, cheese, cracker, water, more, ball, and cold. (My signing vocabulary is only slightly larger, in case you were wondering.) I am having a ball!

I am loving the delurking, so keep it coming. Just say hi, leave the link to your blog, or tell me why you read.
Yay Gatito! He’s so bright! And what an explosion of words!
I’m so glad your Mom thought that was funny, because I would have been howling with laughter.

thank god your mom has a sense of humor. maybe gatito’s perception will make her think twice about the fur issue. and congrats on signing success!!! that is sooooo cool. we’re doing a little signing with milo and i’m getting impatient for him to respond – you give me hope that it will happen someday!

It sounds like he’s got all of life’s important words down!
Delurking…I read because I enjoy hearing about your lovely and loving family, especially the cats! Also, I am personally very ambivalent about having children, and for whatever reason, find reading family blogs very comforting. It’s part of examining my past as an adoptee and questioning my own desires and hopes.
Quite a mouthful for a de-lurker
I suffered a miscarriage at 15 weeks, and then got pregnant pretty quickly again. I have read your pregnancy story over and over for inspiration. I’m still early (9 weeks), so it is great for me to see a story where everything worked out. Also, it is great to read your entries about your life AFTER the pregnancy, I certainly hope I will be able to relate someday!

Hilarious about the fur coat. Maybe we all ought to sign “dog” when we see someone wearing one … do you think that would cause enough of a stir to stop the madness? Ah, wishful thinking.
Wonderful to hear Gatito is learning so much. I think signing is fantastic. Good for you guys!
I read cuz I think you rock, BTW.
Ok, delurking at last… I’ve been reading a little over a year now, and my son is only slightly older, but he and Gatito are pretty close developmentally. We are starting aigning classes this Tuesday after months of me trying half-heartedly to teach him some. He’s got one: Milk. So hearing Gatito’s progress is very inspiring!

Do you have the Signing Time about things in your neighborhood (including buses and motorcycles)? It sounds like it’s right up Gatito’s alley. My local PBS station shows it so we get to cycle through them all for free!
Funny — flipping through a magazine the other day M found a photo of a kid wearing a fake fur coat and kept calling it a dog. How do you explain “fake fur” to a toddler? It’s all dog to her…

I’m not a total lurker, but I don’t comment often either. I enjoy hearing about Gatito, he reminds me of when my boys were little. I taught my older son a little sign language when he was a baby – eat and drink was all he really mastered. Sometimes he still uses the signs instead saying what he wants out loud. He also likes to just say the first letter of the word for things he wants so we have to guess at exactly what he means. He’s a strange little boy….
Wow. Not only is Gatito communicating, he’s a PETA spokesman! (Signsman?) Your child’s healthy sense of irony must be genetic!

The cutest story I have with signing is when my son would sign “please” when he REALLY wanted something. And I just had to give in because he was so damn cute. Also “No” comes in handy when I want to correct his behavior but not make a scene. There are times that we will have an “argument” signing “no” and “yes”. It is quite funny. I wish I had done it with my daughter because signing really comes in handy. Have a great day!
