Look behind you! November 28, 2006

Do you guys feel like you’re watching a horror movie, and I’m just bumbling along while you’re all shouting look behind you?! I wouldn’t blame you if you were aggravated. I’m feeling like a bit of a dunce myself. Even though I’ve had my issues with L, I never considered that she might not be being honest with me until a few of you suggested it. Irresponsible and unreliable, yes. Dishonest, no. And I’m not even that trusting a person normally! I’m generally quite cynical and suspicious!

But in the middle of the night, I suddenly sat up and remembered: Yesterday I called of couple of the numbers of people on my caller ID that I knew had called L while she was here. I spoke with one of them in Spanish and she told me L had been sick for a few days. I asked if she was in the hospital, and the woman said no. I said that she hadn’t shown up for work or called, and she said, uh oh and that she would go by her house and tell her to call me. I’ll bet you anything  she told L to tell me she’d been in the hospital.

I don’t want to be the bitch who fires someone for being in the hospital, especially right around the holidays, nor do I want to be the crazy lady who talks about firing her nanny every time she’s sick. But the weird thing is that, although she never actually called back yesterday, L arrived today acting like nothing happened. A saw her in the morning and I saw her in the evening, and she never even apologized for not calling. We didn’t bother to say anything, because what is the point?

So! The good news is that after letting my nanny search account sit dormant for a while, there are new candidates. One of them sounds too good to be true: child psych major (part time at night) at a local community college, native Spanish speaker with perfect English, lots of experience with young kids/babies and a safe car. We’ll meet her on Saturday. Keep your fingers crossed for me that she’s as great as she sounds!

Um, when L called and told your mom she was in the hospital, what number came up on your Caller ID? That’s the one I’d call back. They don’t allow cell phones in the hospital (and she doesn’t have one anyway, right?), so the number would have to be for the hospital room.

But you already know she wasn’t in the hospital.

Sorry you have to go through this…best of luck with the new nanny hunt.

I don’t think it’s easy for an honest person to get suspicous… Good luck with the search.

    Umm, yeah.

Darlin, I wish you all the best with your hunt. This is a messy thing!

Oh, dear. Well (speaking as the person who had a nasty ol’ ulcer myself), had she actually been in the hospital with an ulcer yesterday, she would not be just bouncing around today like nothing happened. (I think. I’m not a doc, of course.) Ulcers HURT. And they take a while to heal up, even with modern medicine. Offer her something to eat with mustard or lots of vinegar or something, anything acidic. If she eats it and seems fine an hour later, she ain’t got no stinkin’ ulcer.

It was good of you to at least consider her excuse as being true, however. :)

Oh, I hope this one works out! She sounds great!

This may be a great opportunity for you to find someone wonderful. Saturday’s candidate sounds truly great.

As for firing someone around the holidays and because of illness … one must assume there is little love for a job you fail to take seriously enough to show up for. Or apologize for the terrific inconvenience she caused. Or countless other things she’s done.

Maybe she’ll be relieved to move on. Gatito will be better off with someone who wants to be there, you know?

I’m glad to hear you’ll be moving on. Good for you!

::Sigh of relief:: I am so happy you are biting the bullet on this. I know how hard it is to not trust someone you want to believe is doing good. Especially because she is watching your child. I don’t doubt she is good with Gatito, but peace of mind is just as important. Good luck and I hope everything works out!
