Galloping Cats

Dear Gatito,

A year ago today, your dad and I got up very early. He took one last picture of my belly, I said my goodbyes to my outtie belly button and we left for the hospital. By 8:02 a.m., you were born. We were so incredibly happy to welcome you safely into the world. I was nervous that it was going to be really hard to take care of you, and that I wouldn’t enjoy the newborn months, but I have to tell you that I have really and truly loved almost every moment.

This month you’ve started pointing at everything. Most often, you point at things with wheels and round things in general. Every night, you and Daddy look at a picture dictionary, and you point at things while he names them. Every time he gets to the roller skates, you turn around to look at him in surprise. I can tell that your language comprehension is growing by leaps and
bounds. You are not, however, in a hurry to speak in Spanish or English
or sign language (that last is definitely mom’s and dad’s fault). You’re getting
very good at speaking Cat, though.

You are in perpetual motion. Seriously, you never stop moving. You’re a speed demon when crawling, you pull up on anything, and you are still cruising around. I have occasionally seen you balance for a second or two without holding on to anything. You can ride backwards on your ride-on fire truck, and sometimes I look out the window and see L trying to teach you to go forwards, but no dice! A few months ago, you started to bounce when you heard music, and this month I noticed that you can bounce or kick your leg to the beat! I hope this means that you are someone who will grow up to love and appreciate music.

Daddy and I like to show you how pleased we are to see you when you wake up, so we come into your room with a song and dance routine that makes you bounce and squeal with delight. I made up the lyrics, and only later I realized that I borrowed the tune of that song (mazel tov oh mazel tov…) that is sung when people are lifted up on chairs at their bar mitzvahs and weddings.

Your gorgeous coppery hair continues to fill in, and as it gets
longer, it has started to curl a bit. You have six teeth, but you haven’t cut a new one in three or four
months. Your 12 month doctor’s appointment
isn’t for another two weeks, but I’m guessing that you are roughly 33
inches tall and 25 pounds: tall, slim, robust, and gloriously healthy.
(FTOO FTOO FTOO.) On Saturday, we will celebrate with all four of your grandparents, your local aunt and uncle, and your cousins. Mommy is going to bake a cake from scratch!

Thanks for a really terrific year, kiddo. Hope it was as good for you as it was for us. Here’s to your health and happiness for 100 more.

Love,
Mommy
