Galloping Cats

I know I’ve been flipping and flopping on the whole nanny thing for a while. Here’s the update:

My sister has had three fabulous nannies over the years and she has never shared with me any problems she might have had with them, so I assumed everything was perfect. But I was talking to my mom a few days ago about their latest fabulous nanny who started this summer, and heard a new story. My sister had been very clear about never leaving the kids alone in the car, but apparently the nanny interpreted that as applying to parking lots only. So when she got home one day in her first week and my nephew (3.5 years) was asleep in the car, she left him there, in the garage, on one of those very hot summer days. My sister nearly fired her right then and there, but she didn’t and things have been fine since, as far as I know.

What I realized from the story is that no situation is perfect. I know, big shocker. I sat there and wondered for a few days whether or not it would occur to me to tell the nanny obvious things like not to leave Gatito alone in the car. L and I have already worked through that stuff. And she’s a nice person who really loves the kiddo. They know each other so well and he’s happy with her. I trust her with him, I trust her in my house. She hasn’t missed a day in the past six weeks. She’s been here on time and I have been able to give her the advance notice she needs to stay till 5:30. Not to mention I really didn’t meet any serious contenders in the interview process.

It’s not perfect, but it’s pretty good and the most important thing is that I have confidence that Gatito is well cared for. And so, we stick with the status quo and try to make it work.

You’ve really hit the nail on the head here – it is ultimately about what’s best for you and the kiddo.

Having confidence that the person who is minding your child won’t endanger his life is worth a certain amount of other kinds of inconvenience. IMHO.

You are a wise woman… If it’s working okay now, go with it. The start of a new nanny is always difficult!

I want to be the first to say, “HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!!”
