Have I mentioned that this is not working? October 9, 2006

Filed under: Nanny diaries — gallopingcats @ 8:10 pm

I know that this is not interesting to read, but I’m feeling stressed so I’m writing it anyway:

Today I had an important meeting that ran 5:00-6:00. A had a meeting from 3-5:30 that he could take via phone. L was unable to stay past 5:00 so he had to hang up early. Keep in mind that we hired her to work until 5:30 but I got in the habit of letting her go early when things were slow at work and now it’s this huge deal requiring advance notice to get her to stay till 5:30.

On top of this, she asked me for an extra week’s pay. She started the conversation by saying I wasn’t going to like what she was asking, and she was right. The way she phrased it was that she wanted to be paid instead of taking (paid) vacation. It took me a long time to work this out, but what it came down to is that she wanted to work through vacation (holiday week when we’ll be off anyway and won’t want/need her– assuming she’s even still working for us) and, in return, be paid double for it. Except she’d want that extra pay now, of course.

I’m working on the search… waiting for responses to a number of emails I sent today. Vamos a ver.

Nanny/caregiver stuff is especially sucky when you have no transition/back up plan. Good luck …

It’s not working. It really isn’t. Our nanny asked us for a favor – she needed two extra days off aside from the two weeks we had given her, but she offered comp time instead. Basically, your nanny is asking for a paid vacation above and beyond what you already agreed. I would say “no” and bring up the fact that she’s not doing her job as you agreed to it – in other words – she’s not in the position to ask for favors.

Cat – What a crap load of stress and nasty stuff. Is there any feeling at all between A and yourself that maybe Applicant Number 5 was trying too hard to impress you? What did her reference say?

Maybe I’m trying to replace something bad with something possibly bad and unknown, but this does NOT sound like it’s working.

Ummm…no. No way. Ditto what everyone else says…she’s supposed to be working for YOU, not you paying her for work she doesn’t do. I know Gatito loves her, but I really hope you find someone better and more reliable SOON.

That would be the last straw for me. Hope you find someone wonderful soon.

Honestly, I can hardly believe she had the nerve to even ask for that. Wow. Good luck in your search.

Vamos a ver nada, que atrevimento! How dare she, what?? Poor you, working parents really cannot win at times. I hope you can kick her ass to the curb very, very soon.

Now, Gatito has red hair and light skin, and granted, I’m Portuguese and blonde and blue-eyed but you speak Spanish! What gives, linda? Conta-me!
