As you may recall, Victoria Clayton wrote a book, Fearless Pregnancy, and an article on MSNBC which was filled with errors. A couple of examples:
The odds were overwhelmingly in a pregnant woman’s favor that around 40
weeks or so from conception, one way or another and mostly regardless
of what she had or hadn’t done, the average pregnant woman would
deliver a baby and that baby would be just swell.I also discovered that once you saw the fetal heartbeat via an early
ultrasound when you were around six weeks pregnant, your chances of
miscarrying drop to just 2 percent.
I know that most of the readers of this blog are aware that the chance of miscarriage ranges from 25% to as much as 40%, if you include very early miscarriages that typically happen in the first couple of weeks, before most women even know they’re pregnant. I don’t know about you, but I wouldn’t exactly call those "overwhelming" odds. It’s also a total lie that if you hear a heartbeat at 6 weeks your miscarriage risk drops to 2%. There are lots of different reports on this, but generally I have found that, while the risk drops gradually week by week, the significant drop is at 12 weeks– the point at which all of the major organs and parts are formed. I know I had a miscarriage after hearing a heartbeat at 7 weeks and none of the doctors I spoke with felt that the fact that it happened at this stage was particularly noteworthy.
After the publication of her article on MSNBC, Victoria Clayton got a few emails, and she responded to them in an embarassingly inept way on her Fearless Pregnancy blog. After never having received any comments before on her blog, she received, last I checked, 30 or 40 comments on this post, most of them pointing out her inaccuracies.
Are you curious to know how she responded? Are you? Because Akeeyu alerted me to the fact that Victoria Clayton has deleted all of our comments (and removed the commenting option) from her Fearless Pregnancy blog!! What a fucking coward. (Which, if you think about it, is funny for someone who has written a whole book about being fearless…) The whole purpose of a blog is to create a two-way discourse. If you want a PR site, then make a PR site, not a blog! And if you’re so sure that you’re right about everything you wrote, why not refute the points of the commenters? And if they’ve made you aware of things you hadn’t known or thought about, say so and apologize. Simply deleting the discourse is cowardly and sinister, and it makes me mad.
My original comments are posted here, for posterity. If you have a blog, I encourage you to re-create and re-post your comments there as well, or here in my comments section. At the moment I’m on the first page of a Google search for "fearless pregancy blog" and second for a search for "fearless pregnancy." The more you link to one of these two entries, the higher up I’ll go, so go to it!
You know what I liked the best?
That none of the comments were flames. Yes, they were disagreeing with her, strongly, but none of them reverted to semiliterate flaming.
And yet, she couldn’t take the criticism. Why? Because Victoria Clayton is a coward.
Hrmph.
I bought that book and hated it so much I sold it on ebay in pristine condition. I guess her book is not made for us post Ifers or habitual miscarriers. We will remain full of fear until the blessed moment of birth anyway- that book just made me feel stupid for bein so nervous.
I could not even stomach reading her blog, much less her book. I will link to this and do my tiny part to get you a higher Google ranking.
Fearless pregnancy, my ass!
Galloping Cat has smarter things to say about this than I do. I’m too emotional and too busy checking the tp to bother with this Victoria Clayton woman.
It seems like everywhere we go, there is always someone else who has been in our boat, who has problems conceiving, or had miscarriages, or was simply unable to get pregnant at all. It is really a miracle that some idiotic publisher thought that her book would be something worthy to publish. Does she have a fan base at all? I mean, I don’t get it?! Maybe it is because I cannot even imagine having a fearless pregnancy, let alone a viable one at this point, but gees! It makes zero sense to me.

I went on Amazon.com to see what kind of customer reviews there were. The majority were women who feel the way we do. Then there were a few who called the book “A breath of fresh air”, and so on. I just look at those women and say, “Gee it must be nice to be naive and bury your head in the sand”. Next thing you know, Clayton will write a book about what a breeze chemotherapy is and why cancer patients should just “not worry”. Yeah, right.
I was going to say that in addition to posting your original comments here, those of you who can should post feedback at Amazon. Amazon is less likely to remove critical comments (and it used to be they didn’t remove ANYTHING), even if an author doesn’t like the feedback she’s getting.
And FWIW, I totally agree that her content is factually wrong on many accounts. She just wrote a book that could feed into the many fears we all have about “doing everything perfectly” with regard to pregnancy… and contrary to her “no fear” persona, she’s actually a cowardly, spineless, and completely clueless bitch for removing the constructive criticism of her book on her blog.
Not to further “stir it up” but you can find the cached version of her blog page WITH THE ORIGINAL COMMENTS, here:

I’m not sure how long the cached content will be there, and I copied the text into a word document just in case it does disappear, but I didn’t want to just repost all the original comments here since it’s Cat’s site, not mine. But those of you interested in seeing it, or finding your original comments, can check there.
I still can’t believe she took the comments down. Spineless, not fearless.

I LOVE YOU ALL!!! I read that STUPID ASS article on msn, and immediately fired off a comment that gee, must be nice to be able to sit back and relax and enjoy pregnancy, SINCE NOTHING BAD WILL EVER HAPPEN, meanwhile, I’m gravida 3, para 0. What a wanker she is. So smug.
to all you “habitual miscarriers” out there, I love you all, and I hope you all make it through one day.
FYI, a great book to read on the topic is “Coming to Term” by Jon Cohen, he and his wife had a kid, then like 4 miscarriages, and then another kid, and he researched the HELL out of miscarriage because he was so angry at the medical profession for giving him and his wife bogus information about miscarriage.
xoxoxo

I’ve heard some horrible things about the co-author too.
WOW, Bitter much? so galloping cat lady. Do you have a degree in the medical field? Nursing? Practicing MD perhaps? yeah. I didn’t thinks so.
One of the co-authors, the so-called “Fearless Doc,” has been put on 7 years probation by the California Medical Board for sexual exploitation of a patient. See here:

Isn’t that reassuring?
