It’s alive! March 23, 2005

If you were looking for a clever little narrative that saves the best information for last, you’ve come to the wrong blog, because I’m going to cut right to the chase.

Alive, measuring at 7 weeks exactly, with a heart rate of 152 bpm, so right on target! Such a relief. We’ve made it at least as far as last time.

Dr. Gruff turned out to be just fine. A tiny bit on the patronizing side, but approachable and kind. Not like he’s been on the phone in the past.

For some added excitement, Dr. Concerned, who I’d like to re-name Chicken Little, except I plan never to see her again, so why bother, called a few hours before the appointment and pronounced me very anemic and seemed stunned to hear that I wasn’t miscarrying right that very second.

Are you bleeding? she asked. No.
Are you sure? Yes.
You’re not bleeding? Not a fucking drop, you bitch.

She then proceeded to tell me my risk of miscarriage was increased. Knowing a little bit about her M.O., I decided not to panic. (Are you proud of me?) I consulted Dr. Google, which, first of all, showed no indication that anemia causes miscarriage, though it can cause pre-term labor if it goes on untreated through the second trimester. My hemoglobin was 10.7 and apparently anything under 11 is problematic. So anemic? Sure. Very anemic? A bit of an overstatement, doncha think? Dr. Gruff sure thought it was. He didn’t even blink at the number, recommended Slow FE and said to check again next week.

We’ve come up with a dumb name for the embryo and it’s not a legume: We’re calling it Tink, after a slope at the ski resort where it was conceived. (Not on the slope itself. We’re not that kind of people. At a condo nearby. Just to be clear.)

Next up: Ultrasound with Dr. Nice next Friday.

Tink. Awwwwwww. Now, if it’s a boy, be sure to call him that before he picks up his prom date. heehee

Very happy to hear today was so perfect, in spite of Chicken Little.

  2. Jen P Says:

So, very, very glad your little one is alive and doing well!

As for Chicken Little, it does seem 7 weeks is when they decide to go for the jugular. Stupid bitch.

I’m glad you’re doing well, and have a good doctor to recognize what’s a little low and NOT abyssmal.

Lots of luck with the FE and wishing you a lovely week.

  3. Amanda Says:

    sigh (of relief :-) )
I am so happy that Tink is in there, alive, where he/she belongs.

And as for that cunt ( I reserve that lovely word for only those well deserving), she could have told you that you needed supplimentation and let the chips fall where they may. Period.

  4. jamie Says:

YAY, TINK! Keep up the good growth.

(and yay to Tink’s mommy for not letting that heinous bitch doctor cause panic!)

  5. Nina Says:

So glad to hear the good news about Tink!

  6. Lala Says:

You never mentioned Tink!! I love it.

  7. Kate Says:

    YAY! YAY! YAY!

    *happy dance*

What a huge relief. :) Oooh! And when you have your next u/s, it’ll have cute little arm and leg buds.

    Awwwww!

Oh, and PS- You might consider taking Colace (stool softener) with your SlowFE. I took that stuff, and it did a number on me. :)

  8. Trish Says:

So the anemia would be why you’ve been dizzy, right? Well, while it sucks to have anything going on that isn’t ‘normal’- it’s good that there is a fix and you should be feeling better!

YAY on the wonderful heart beat and U/S!!!

  9. thisgirl Says:

very VERY happy for you. Congrats on the good news!

  10. wessel Says:

YEAH!!!!! Congrats on reaching this milestone. Take your iron, and always with a glass of OJ, cause vit c helps the absorption . . . Of course, that iron tab isn’t going to go down well if you are nauseated. Wishing you an easy, uneventful 9 months. :-)

  11. deborah Says:

Does this make you a “Tink Tank”?

Very relieved to hear your good news. I hope you continue to be blessed with uneventful doctor’s visits.

  12. akeeyu Says:

May I assvise, just a teensy bit?

Okay. Like Wessel said, vitamin C helps with iron absorption, calcium interferes, and Cream of Wheat with apricots is a tasty way to sneak in iron!

  13. Day Says:

    Specatacular Cat! Wonderful news.

Chicken Little is a bit the Drama Queen, no? 10.7 ain’t no big thing.

Instead of offering assvice, as a reluctant expert on anemia and ways to control it, I offer up my attentive ear and knowledge for whatever questions you might have.

Here’s to health and happiness for you, A, and Tink.

  14. Lala Says:

Tink Tank!! Deborah cracks me up!!!

  15. Milenka Says:

    Congratulations! :-)

  16. Lioness Says:

YEY! Great news Cat! Excellent news! I am so thrilled for you two and Tink. TINK! That’s adorable.

(And, tink tank? TINK TANK??? Deborah, you rock my world!)

  17. Cat Says:

*does a little happy dance* Great News! I hope this trend of happy continues all the way to the finish line.

  18. Julie M Says:

Hey! My iron was 10.7 the other day too at my 14 week appointment. I hadn’t been taking my vitamin because of nausea and constipation. So, I started again. Congrats on the good ultrasound results.
