Neither my hooters nor I have anything to say over here today, so please go visit Jamie with the bad luck in Hawaii and tell her something cheerful.
Oh and, since someone got here looking for this heartwarming story (apparently because both the searcher and I misspelled "tsunami"), about a hippo who lost its mother in the tsunami being adopted by a tortoise, I thought I’d pass it along.
Oh and what the heck, I stole the pics, too. Yeah, I’m a sucker for a cute animal story.
Edited to add: A’s reaction to this warm and fuzzy story? "Did it ever occur to anybody that maybe the hippo just moves faster than the tortoise and the tortoise cannot get away? And did you know that hippos are extremely aggressive animals and are responsible for more human deaths than any other animal?" So I went back and re-read the story and yeah, there’s no evidence that the tortoise likes the hippo… only that the hippo licks the tortoise’s face, which might not be that nice. Hrumph.

Awwww, yeah, I’m a sucker for an animal story too. Whenever I see a cute animal I always ask my husband, “Can we have one?” Good thing our backyard is way too small to really do that. He says yes everytime by the way
thanks. (although if you can type with your hooters, that’s probably more interesting than anything I have to say!)
Sometimes I can care less about human life ( I know that sounds bad), but show me a suffering animal and I am a mess. The photos of the hippo and the tortoise made me tear up. The hippo is soooo cute. I love animals. All kinds. When I was little I wanted to be a vet until I figured out that I might not be able to handle the sadness of the animals being sick and suffering.
That hippo has to be the sweetest thing I’ve seen in a looong time.
I ask Matt every year for xmas and my birthday if we could please sell the house so I could go study zoology and work in the zoo. I so wish he’d say yes one time.
They look happy enough, don’t they?
“The 100 year-old tortoise named Mzee (Swahili for “old man”) was not immediately taken with the brash newcomer — he turned and hissed, forcing the hippo to back away. Yet within days, the pair had forged a friendship, and now eat and sleep together.” So you’d assume that if he hated the hippo, he’d keep hissing.
Hope you’re doing ok and all is well.
This is both hilarious and also so sad! I almost cried. Poor little hippo. Sweet motherly tortoise. Sigh.
And I’m with Amanda; I’ve had dogs I’d save before certain humans, say, if we were fleeing a burning building or floating in the ocean after a shipwreck.
